In non-fiction works, they verify citations, footnotes, and bibliographies. Proofreaders may also be required to liaise with authors and editors to discuss and implement changes.

Proofreaders should possess strong English language skills and a keen eye for detail. They should have excellent knowledge of grammar and style conventions. Time management and the ability to meet tight deadlines are also critical. Familiarity with industry-specific software and certification from a recognized organization such as the Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP) can be beneficial. Prior to becoming a Proofreader, one might have roles such as a Copy Editor, Content Writer, or an Editorial Assistant, which provide a good foundation for understanding the nuances of the publishing industry and honing the required skills.
