Position Summary

The Learning and Publications Editor plays a key role in developing and editing clinical education content across digital learning platforms and print publications. This position collaborates closely with online education, continuing medical education (CME), and publications teams to produce engaging, high-quality educational resources for ophthalmologists and allied health professionals. The role supports the Academy’s mission by ensuring educational content is accurate, accessible, and aligned with adult learning principles and CME standards.

Role and Responsibilities Online Learning Content Development & Editing
  • Edit and proofread new and existing online clinical education content, including courses, case studies, quizzes, and learning plans.
  • Query authors and reviewers to clarify submissions and reconcile editorial feedback.
  • Develop abstracts, promotional blurbs, biographies, and related educational copy.
  • Produce online educational activities using current web technologies and rapid e-learning authoring tools.
  • Apply adult learning principles and user-centered design best practices to improve learner engagement and educational effectiveness.
  • Support the development of CME applications, needs assessments, and gap analyses.
Publications & Editorial Production
  • Manage editorial production for book-length publications serving residents, practicing ophthalmologists, allied health professionals, and non-ophthalmic physicians.
  • Coordinate copyediting, proofreading, and production workflows for print and ebook formats.
  • Prepare manuscripts and files for composition and publication.
  • Review references, permissions, and supporting documentation for accuracy and compliance.
  • Maintain editorial consistency across publications in alignment with AMA style and medical publishing standards.
Project & Stakeholder Management
  • Maintain editorial production schedules and monitor project progress across multiple concurrent initiatives.
  • Coordinate with physician authors, volunteer committees, reviewers, and internal stakeholders to support timely project completion.
  • Collaborate with multimedia vendors and external partners on illustrations, interactive learning elements, video, and digital assets.
  • Support clinical webinar programming and related educational initiatives.
  • Contribute recommendations on editorial style, workflow efficiencies, and content presentation strategies.
Qualifications, Skills, and Education Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, Journalism, Education, Life Sciences, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 3–5 years of editorial experience in medical, scientific, technical, or educational publishing.
  • Strong knowledge of AMA style, medical terminology, and standard editorial practices.
  • Experience working with digital learning content, learning management systems, or e-learning authoring tools such as Articulate or similar platforms.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with CME/ACCME guidelines, gap analyses, and educational activity development.
  • Experience supporting volunteer committees or working within nonprofit or association environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple deadlines and stakeholders in a fast-paced environment.
Work Environment
  • This position follows a hybrid schedule, with 3 in-office days per week at our San Francisco headquarters.
Additional Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds.
  • Ability to travel approximately 6–12 days annually.
  • Eligibility for up to two remote days per week with manager approval.
Compensation and Benefits

Salary: $102,824 annually
