Position Overview
  • Role Type: 1.5-Year Temporary Contract
  • Work Location: Chino, CA (Hybrid Structure 2 days onsite)
  • Experience Level: Mid-to-Senior Professional (Not an entry-level position)

We are seeking an experienced Technical Procedure Writer to develop and maintain safety-critical work methods, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and operational manuals for heavy industrial and utility field operations. In this role, you will bridge the gap between complex engineering/safety standards and the practical, high-risk execution needs of field craft personnel (e.g., linemen, technicians, and riggers).

This is a high-visibility, safety-sensitive position requiring a professional who can confidently lead technical working sessions with veteran field experts and translate operational insights into highly precise, field-ready documentation under rigorous audit and compliance timelines.

Core Responsibilities 1. Work Method & Procedure Development
  • Design, draft, rewrite, and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), job aids, performance support notebooks, and specialized field manuals (e.g., rigging, grounding, transmission, and high-voltage safety manuals).
  • Ensure all documentation is practically structured, field-ready, and highly usable for craft personnel working under intense safety protocols.
  • Align all deliverables with strict internal governance, corporate policies, and regulatory compliance standards.
2. SME Facilitation & Technical Analysis
  • Schedule, build agendas for, and independently facilitate technical working sessions with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), field supervisors, and engineers.
  • Extract complex technical inputs, operational nuances, and legacy field practices, driving consensus among stakeholders to translate observations into plain, actionable language.
  • Consolidate disparate technical materials, vendor manuals, and engineering presentations into cohesive, accurate documentation.
3. Field Engagement & Media Support
  • Conduct on-site field visits and job walks to observe physical processes firsthand and validate written workflows.
  • Perform basic digital image editing and layout adjustments to visually support procedural documentation.
  • Collaborate with media and training vendors to write clear instructional scripts and guide digital content development.
4. Maintenance & Lifecycle Management
  • Manage strict document version control and follow structured review/approval workflows.
  • Continuously update existing libraries in response to regulatory standard changes, safety workstreams, corrective actions, and the introduction of new equipment or machinery.
Required Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience: 58+ years of dedicated technical/procedural writing experience, OR 35+ years of technical writing experience paired with strong exposure to utility, industrial, or field-operations environments.
  • Operational Capabilities: Proven track record of translating complex technical concepts or engineering instructions into plain, field-usable documentation.
  • Facilitation: Exceptional communication and presentation skills, with demonstrated comfort leading collaborative technical working sessions involving experienced field personnel.
  • Software Proficiency: Strong core discipline utilizing Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, OneDrive, Adobe Acrobat, Teams, Outlook, and AI-assisted productivity tools (e.g., Copilot). Experience with basic photo/image editing software is required.
  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required. A Bachelors degree in Communications, Technical Writing, or a related technical discipline is highly preferred.
Desired Attributes
  • Direct technical writing experience within utilities, energy transmission/distribution, power generation, construction, or heavy manufacturing environments is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with Management of Change (MOC) workflows and compliance audit processes.
