The Instructional Designer (ID) is an integral team member in developing online courses and digital assets for Butler University. The ID is part of the Digital Learning Team and the broader Online Education and Educational Technology (OOET) team OEET partners with colleges, programs, and departments to create quality online education and support learning through innovative technology.

More specifically, the ID is crucial in creating engaging and meaningful learning experiences for online students. This position partners with subject matter experts (SMEs) to utilize instructional design principles and educational technologies to design, build, and evaluate effective, engaging, and accessible online learning materials that meet the diverse needs of students while maintaining quality and online compliance standards.

OEET allows for a work schedule that offers both remote and in-person options. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop collaborative partnerships with (SMEs) who serve as course authors, to create engaging, high-quality, and accessible online courses
  • Collaborate with SMEs to create courses that align with instructional design standards, pedagogical and evidence-based best practices, accessibility requirements, and institutional and program learning outcomes
  • Create SME-developed instructional content using interactive activities, simulations, and assessments within the Learning Management System (LMS) that align with best practices in online education to enhance student engagement and facilitate knowledge retention
  • Analyze data to inform the design of effective learner-centered experiences and drive continuous improvement efforts of learning experiences
  • Ensure all learning materials and course content comply with Section 508 accessibility standards and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), making courses fully accessible
  • Evaluate, recommend, and effectively integrate appropriate educational technologies to support the student learning experience, align with outcomes, and maintain accessibility standards
  • Oversee and coordinate multiple projects concurrently with various stakeholders, ensuring the timely and efficient delivery of high-quality course content
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with team members and stakeholders, understanding their strengths and skill sets, communication styles, and motivation, to effectively drive results
  • Facilitate faculty development in instructional design principles, pedagogical and evidence-based practices, and educational technologies related to online learning
  • Stay current with emerging trends in instructional/learning design, educational technology, online education, and higher education

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Experience in learning experience design, instructional design, e-learning development, training, or related field
  • Experience designing and developing engaging, innovative, and aligned online instructional material and assessments
  • Ability to collaborate with faculty from a wide range of subject matter areas and understand unique program needs to recommend best practices for course design
  • Knowledge of adult learning theories, instructional design models, multimedia learning principles, universal design for learning, accessibility standards, and copyright laws
  • Proficiency with course authoring/production tools, learning management systems, Google Suite, Microsoft Suite, and video conferencing
  • Ability to take initiative, prioritize work, and manage multiple projects simultaneously to achieve desired results
  • Ability and willingness to work independently and in a team environment, including physical or virtual environments with a passion for supporting and serving as an advocate of diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly explain instructional design concepts to non-technical stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, or related field
  • 2+ years of experience designing online learning experiences, specifically in higher education settings
  • Proficiency with Canvas; e-learning innovative authoring tools such as Articulate, H5P, or similar; HTML, and DesignPLUS
  • Quality Matters (QM) certification or experience applying QM Standards
  • Certification or demonstrated experience in project management (e.g., PMP, Agile, or related training)
