Job DescriptionNBC News Digital is seeking a newsroom leader to direct its editorial publishing operations and the front pages, so to speak, where our award-winning journalism appears.
This person will set the strategy and oversee the owned platforms, social, art and copy teams, and will be responsible for the planning and quality of work published on our megaphones: the NBCNews.com homepage, app and social accounts.
There are two main components of this role.
First is directing and setting the strategy for the look and feel of our front pages. Questions you might ask are: Is this story strong enough for top or second billing on our app? When should it run? Is the art compelling enough? What is the most accurate and compelling headline for the homepage? Is there an angle we are missing during a major news event that the front page needs?
Second is evaluating and ensuring the quality of the work on those front pages. As such, the person in this role must be an absolutely impeccable writer and editor, able to identify where copy can be improved and sometimes diving in and rewriting. This could include improving the mainbar on a major breaking news event, like a terrorist attack, or providing top edits on a news feature scheduled to run on the front page on Saturday morning , or helping bulletproof an enterprise piece.
The editor should be an audience metrics obsessive and seek to understand the NBC News Digital reader/viewer, able to quickly grasp performance numbers and distill them into actionable takeaways. The person needs to be an excellent manager, able to coach and career-develop team leads, senior editors and individual contributors on every desk they oversee. And they should be an excellent communicator and collaborator, able to work across digital and the broader broadcast organization.
This is an entrepreneurial role that will help set the voice and strategy for NBC News Digital. It will also involve experimenting with how to appeal to new audiences and make them habitual consumers of our journalism.
Most critically, the editor should be incredibly passionate about the news well-read , curious, ambitious and always thinking about what will make NBC News stand out to our audience and attract new readers and viewers.
