Role Overview
The Technical Writer II is responsible for creating, editing, and maintaining mission-critical IT documentation and contract deliverables in support of Department of Defense (DoD) and Department of War (DoW) enterprise systems. This role involves translating complex technical specifications into clear, concise, and compliant documentation for both technical engineering teams and non-technical stakeholders, as well as managing recurring reporting requirements.
Responsible for creating clear, concise, and accurate documentation for products, services, or processes, often in high-tech or specialized fields. Involves translating complex information into user manuals, guides, help files, white papers, and training materials that are easily understandable by the target audience. Must have excellent writing skills, a keen eye for detail, and the ability to grasp intricate technical concepts quickly. Work closely with engineers, product developers, and subject matter experts to ensure the content's technical accuracy and relevance. Proficient with documentation tools, understanding of XML, DITA, or other markup languages, and familiarity with graphics and publishing software are often required. Update documentation as products evolve, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations. Duties and Responsibilities:Documentation Creation
- Author, revise, and maintain comprehensive IT system documentation, including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), user manuals, API documentation, and system architecture guides.Contract Deliverables (CDRLs)Develop, format, and manage recurring contract deliverables such as Monthly Status Reports (MSRs), technical White Papers, and performance dashboards in alignment with strict contract schedules.
- Interface directly with Systems Engineers, Software Developers, and Cybersecurity teams to extract and synthesize technical details into standardized documentation.
- Ensure all technical documentation and deliverables adhere to DoD guidelines, Risk Management Framework (RMF) documentation standards, and contract-specific style guides.
- Conduct rigorous peer reviews, copyediting, and formatting checks on documents produced by other team members to ensure clarity, accuracy, and professional presentation.
Artifact Management
- Manage document version control and repositories within DoD-approved systems (e.g., Atlassian Confluence, SharePoint) operating at Impact Level 5 (IL5).
- 3 to 5 years of professional technical writing experience, with at least 1 year supporting a DoD or federal IT contract.
- Prior experience creating Contract Data Requirements List (CDRL) deliverables, including Monthly Status Reports, White Papers, and dashboards, is strictly required.
Technical Proficiency
- Advanced proficiency in MS Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, and content management systems (e.g., Confluence, Jira).
Subject Matter Knowledge
- Demonstrated understanding of general IT infrastructure, cloud computing concepts, and basic cybersecurity terminology.
Certifications
- CompTIA Security+ or Certified Technical Professional (CTP) certification.
Advanced Tools - Experience with Markdown, HTML/CSS, or generating documentation from code repositories (e.g., GitHub/GitLab).
- Familiarity with DoDAF (DoD Architecture Framework), ITIL v4 processes, and experience with DoD Records Management tenets.
