Position Summary
The Program in Judaic Studies at Princeton University invites applications for a position as Managing Editor of Jewish Studies Quarterly (JSQ). Edited by Lora Batnitzky (Princeton University) and Peter Schfer (Princeton University), JSQ publishes academic studies on all aspects of Jewish history and culture.
The primary task of the Managing Editor will be to edit and proofread English scholarly prose, particularly for scholars for whom English is not a native language. Additional responsibilities include handling e-mail and mail correspondence with authors, prospective authors, and others; helping to shepherd accepted articles to publication; overseeing the work of graduate student assistants; and coordinating editorial efforts with the staff at the journal's publisher in Germany; as well as taking care of various technical tasks, such as the standardization of style in footnote referencing, integration of revisions, and conversion of electronic files between different word-processing formats. The managing editor will have opportunities to solicit, select, and/or review submissions for the journal.
Essential Qualifications
The ideal candidate is a methodical, responsible, detail-oriented, and efficient individual with advanced degree in Jewish Studies, History, English, or another field in the Humanities. Excellence in English grammar and style is necessary, as are strong proficiency with MS Word for Windows and familiarity with (or ability quickly to learn) other word-processing programs. Some background in Hebrew, Greek, and/or German is preferred but not requisite.
